Your furnace is an integral part of your home. Without it, you would be mighty cold in the winter months. However, your furnace needs to be taken care of to keep it working fine and prevent it from breaking down on you. If your furnace starts making a bunch of weird noises, you need to have someone look at it for you to determine what is going on. Here are three of the common noises that you might hear coming from your furnace.
If you notice a rather loud, shrill sound, almost like a teapot when the water is nice and hot, coming from your furnace, you might be dealing with a problem with the motor. The motor is composed of seals, bearings, gaskets and other components that all work together. Oftentimes, you can eliminate the noise by lubricating the bearings and gaskets inside of the motor. Another thing to look at is the belt to make sure it isn't worn or frayed. However, you might need more than that. If lubricating the bearings and gaskets and replacing the belt doesn't correct the problem for you, it might be time to turn to a specialist for assistance.
Ticking or rattling.
Many furnaces make rattling noises when they are powering down. However, that doesn't mean they should be making noises all the time. You probably aren't going to be able to find a furnace that is going to run quietly all the time. Oftentimes, the internal components will make noise as they cool down. However, a noise that continues going after the furnace is off could be a sign of a motor or belt problem. If the belt isn't in good condition, it can cause components like the motor to rattle because they aren't held securely in place. A bearing going out in the motor can also cause a rattling noise.
Banging or burping noises.
Your ductwork can rattle and bang around if it is loose and needs to be secured in place. However, if the problem doesn't lie in your ductwork, that often means something more is going on inside of your system that needs to be resolved. It could be something like a damaged belt or another internal component that made its way loose. If noises keep getting louder, you don't want to wait to get them looked at and taken care of.
