Ah, summer. It is a lot of people's favorite time of the year. You'll be outside more with family and friends and there will be picnics and other outdoor events to go to. If you are a homeowner though, summer can bring some challenges for the maintenance and upkeep of your property that you haven't had to deal with since, well, the previous summer. Here's a quick checklist of areas throughout your home or property that you'll want to check out before summer arrives to ensure that no problems develop that would require the use of a local plumber.

Inspect Your Sewer Lines

If your area of the country gets a lot of rain during the summer, you'll want to take a look around your sewer lines and drains and make sure that any water that accumulates will be able to drain freely. Watch out for tree roots underground that can spread and crack your sewer pipes. If you notice the beginning of trouble in or around your sewer drain, call a plumber for a closer inspection.

Inspect Your Washing Machine

A lot of families tend to do more laundry in the summer, due to the extra clothes the kids and even the adults can go through from playing outside and getting sweaty. That additional stress on the washing machine can be bad if you haven't been keeping an eye on it. Check the hose that drains the water from the basin and make sure there is no build up of soap residue that could cause a blockage. Also consider lowering the water level when possible while doing laundry to reduce wear and tear and save money on your water bill as well.

Inspect Your Sprinklers

If your front yard has a sprinkler system, you will want to inspect them before you turn them on for the first time and make sure there is not a clog that has built up over the winter. Don't forget to lower the sprinkler heads as well before you mow the lawn for the first time. When installing new sprinklers, try to keep them away from your sewer line, just in case something goes wrong during installation.

Summer is one of the most fun seasons of the year, but that fun can evaporate if your home or property develops a plumbing problem. Inspect key areas like the washing machine and your sewer line before summer arrives to make sure that everything is running properly. If you need help, contact a local plumber for assistance.
